Quick answer

Grover Work lets customers pay invoices by bank transfer (ACH) as well as by card. Bank payments are processed by Stripe at a low percentage with a dollar cap, which matters most on large invoices. The figures below come from our live plan data.

Why ACH matters for contractors

Card fees are a percentage, so the bigger the invoice, the more they cost. On a deposit or a final balance of several thousand dollars, the difference between a card fee and a capped bank transfer fee is real money.

Many homeowners are comfortable paying a large invoice from their bank, especially when the link is right on the invoice and they do not have to read out account details.

How it works in Grover Work

Bank payment on every invoice

Customers choose card or bank on the same payment link. The payment is matched to the invoice when it arrives.

Processed by Stripe

Payments run through Stripe, so Grover Work never stores card or bank details. Funds go to your own Stripe account and then to your bank.

Capped bank fee

Stripe's standard ACH Direct Debit price is a small percentage with a fixed cap per payment. The table shows it with each plan's fee.

Plan fee waived on bank payments

On Pro and Scale there is no Grover Work plan fee on bank payments. Starter pays its plan fee on bank payments too, as shown below.

Things to know before you rely on ACH

  • Bank transfers take longer to arrive than card payments. The timing is set by Stripe and the banks.
  • A bank payment can be returned, for example if the account has insufficient funds, so treat the job as paid when the funds have arrived.
  • Payment accounts are approved by Stripe, which can take a few days. Start setup early, since nobody at Grover Work can speed it up or promise the outcome.

Assumptions behind these tables

  • Card payments: 2.9% plus $0.30 per payment, the standard US Stripe rate we use in our calculator.
  • Bank payments (ACH): 0.8% with a cap of $5.00 per payment.
  • The Grover Work plan fee is a small percentage of each payment, with a cap per payment, shown in the Plan fee column. On Pro and Scale the plan fee is not charged on bank payments; Starter pays it.
  • Standard domestic payments only. Disputes, international or premium cards, instant payouts and other optional services are priced separately by Stripe.
  • Rounded to the cent. Rates change, so confirm Stripe’s current published pricing. These tables are calculated from the live Grover Work plan data each time the page loads.

Questions, answered

What is ACH payment processing?

ACH is the US bank-to-bank transfer network. For a contractor it means the customer pays an invoice directly from their bank account instead of with a card, usually at a lower fee on larger amounts.

How much does ACH cost for a contractor?

It depends on the processor and your plan. In Grover Work, Stripe's standard bank payment rate applies, shown in the table on this page along with each plan's fee. Always check Stripe's current published pricing, since processors can change their rates.

Is ACH cheaper than credit cards?

For larger invoices, usually yes, because the bank rate is capped while card fees keep growing with the amount. On very small invoices the difference is small.

How long does an ACH payment take?

Longer than a card payment. The exact timing depends on Stripe and the customer's bank, so we do not promise a number of days.

Can a customer reverse an ACH payment?

A bank transfer can be returned, for example for insufficient funds, and customers can dispute unauthorized payments with their bank. That is why it is wise to treat the work as paid only when the funds have settled.
